Bringing freeze-dried salmon to work at the office
Updated
Salmon treats for office dogs start with the office, not the salmon. Ask whoever sets the dog rules whether treats are allowed. If they are, weigh the day's share at home, bring the pouch resealed, and keep one person in charge of handing it out. Everything else on this page hangs off those four steps.
Can you bring salmon treats to the office?
Ask first. We cannot tell you what your workplace allows, and neither can the bag. A dog friendly office may have a written policy, an informal understanding or nothing at all, and the person who knows is whoever manages the space. If there is a policy, read it. If there is not, ask the manager and the people who sit nearest your desk.
Ask about the treat itself, too. Freeze-dried salmon is a fish treat, and a question about fish is a better question than a general one about snacks. Get a plain yes or no and keep it.
Once you have a yes, the work bag is simple:
- The day's share, weighed at home
- The pouch, resealed
- Your dog's water bowl
- A way to wash or clean your hands
That is the whole kit. The listing says: "The pieces are medium sized and break into small, quick rewards," so the breaking can happen at home too, before the commute.
Where should the pouch live during the workday?
Wherever you can follow the bag's two instructions. The bag says: "Reseal the pouch once it is open and store it cool and dry." That is the full list. Nothing on the bag names a desk drawer, a shelf or a bag hook as good or bad, and we will not invent a verdict for any of them.
So the pouch lives in a place you control, with the seal closed between rewards. If you need a refresher on open-pouch storage, our storage guide covers it, and we will not repeat it here.
The day's share is the other half of the plan. The weighed amount rides in its own closed container, and that container is what comes out of the bag at your desk. The pouch stays put.
Should coworkers hand out treats?
Only if you say yes, and only by asking first. A coworker who wants to give your dog a bit should ask you, and you answer. The pouch stays with you. The share stays with you. Anyone who gets a bit from the container takes it from your hand or hands it over with your say-so.
One person keeps the count. That is you, or a colleague you name for the day, and the weighed share stays in that person's keeping. Once it has all been handed out, your dog is finished with salmon for the workday. Nobody else at work needs to track a thing. They only need to ask.
Since the salmon is raw before it is freeze-dried, the bag's hand washing line sits between the pouch and your keyboard. The bag says: "Wash your hands after handling it." That applies to the coworker who handed a bit to your dog, too. Mention it when you say yes.
How much salmon does a workday use?
The workday is part of the dog's day, not extra on top of it. The calculator on our product page starts with your dog's daily calories and returns a treat allowance in grams and ounces of salmon, set at 10 percent. That setting is fixed on the calculator. If your vet names a different share, use the vet's amount instead, and weigh out the day's portion at home.
The bag also says: "Not intended as a complete diet." Treat time at the office draws from the same weighed share as treat time at home, so if the dog gets some at work, the rest of the day gets less.
Our guides hub collects every other salmon page we have.
Questions
Will the salmon bother coworkers?
We make no claim about how it smells to anyone else. Our smell guide covers the smell itself, and asking the people who sit near you is quicker than guessing. If someone says it bothers them, that answer is theirs, and it is worth hearing early.
Should I wash my hands before going back to my keyboard?
Yes. Handing out salmon at your desk is handling it, and the bag says: "Wash your hands after handling it." The salmon is raw before it is freeze-dried, so settle where you will wash before the first treat comes out, not after.
Can I leave a treat out for my dog during a meeting?
The bag says: "Provide fresh water and supervise while feeding." A bit left on the floor while you are in a meeting is not supervised feeding. Hand the bit over while you are there to watch, and leave the rest in the pouch, resealed, until you are back.
What if another office dog wants some?
Ask that dog's owner, and keep your own count to your own dog. The calculator covers your dog, not the one in the next cubicle. The other owner's vet sets the other dog's share. If the owner says no, or not today, the answer is no.
Is office treat time the same as a training session?
It can be either. If you give a bit for a trick, it is a training rep. If you give a bit because it is a Tuesday, it is a handout. Either way, the bit comes out of the same weighed share, and nothing more comes out once that share is spent.
