Keeping an open pouch of freeze-dried salmon right

Updated

How to store freeze dried salmon comes down to two steps: close the pouch fully after every use and keep it somewhere cool and dry, away from steam and sinks. The listing calls it shelf stable, so the fridge is not part of the directions. Wash your hands after handling, and check your own pouch for dates.

How do you store freeze-dried salmon after opening?

Reseal it every time. The directions for our freeze-dried pink salmon are short. The bag says: "Reseal the pouch once it is open and store it cool and dry." Everything else on this page is practical detail around that one line.

The reason is simple. Freeze-dried pieces are dry on purpose, with moisture capped at 11 percent on the label, and the thing that works against a dry piece is water. A steamy kitchen, a splash from the faucet or a damp fingertip reaching into the pouch all add some.

Here is the routine, in the order you would actually do it:

  1. Take out only the pieces you plan to use, with dry hands.
  2. Seal the pouch again right after you take pieces out.
  3. Put the pouch in a cool, dry spot, such as a cupboard or pantry shelf.
  4. Place it where the dog cannot reach it on their own.
  5. Wash your hands with soap and water when you are done.

That last step belongs here because the salmon is freeze-dried raw. Handling raw pet food is the reason the product page asks for hand washing, and it also asks you to clean whatever the pieces touched. The product page covers raw handling in full, and your veterinarian is the person to ask about anything specific to your dog.

Does freeze-dried salmon need to go in the fridge?

No. The listing calls the product shelf stable, and the bag asks for cool and dry, not cold. Nothing in the directions calls for a refrigerator, so we leave it out.

The freezer is a separate question that the pouch does not address. Since the printed instruction is cool and dry, that is where this page stays. You are free to decide how you keep your own pantry, but a freezer is not a step we can tell you is needed.

Think of a box of crackers. You would not refrigerate it. You would fold the liner closed and keep the box away from the stove.

How long does an open pouch last?

About 30 days. That is our suggestion for an open pouch, counted from the day you break the seal, and it is our guidance rather than a line from the label. A sealed pouch keeps until its best-by date, set one year from production and printed on the pouch.

If you tend to lose track, write the opening date on the pouch with a marker. Should a piece look or smell different before the 30 days are up, leave it out and ask Sniff and Shift through the product page.

Without a number, habits matter more than math. If a pouch has been in the back of a cupboard for a stretch, look at the pieces before you offer them, using the section below as a guide.

Where should broken pieces go between uses?

Freeze-dried salmon is crumbly. The medium pieces break into small ones, and some of those break again into crumbs.

Keep those crumbs in the pouch. They are still the same single ingredient, and they work well sprinkled over a meal or used in a toy. If you break pieces ahead of time for a training session, put the extras back in the pouch rather than leaving them out.

If you want a small working container for the day, choose one that closes tightly and is completely dry inside, and return what is left to the pouch when you are done. That way the pouch is open for seconds, not for a whole session.

The guide to using salmon treats covers how to hand pieces over, so this page leaves the training details there.

How do you keep your hands and counters clean?

Wash your hands with soap and water after you touch the pieces, and wash anything the pieces touched, such as a cutting board, a scoop or a bowl. Treat it as you would any raw food: the cleanup is part of feeding it, not an extra.

Use a dedicated scoop or a clean, dry spoon instead of reaching in with your fingers each time. That keeps your hands out of the pouch and keeps stray moisture out with them. Wipe the counter where you set the pouch down, and wash the bowl you fed from.

Keep the pouch itself away from the pile of dishes, wet towels and the edge of the sink.

Salmon is a treat or a meal topper and not a complete diet, so use it in small amounts, give fresh water, and watch your dog while they eat it. Storing it well is the easy part of that routine. If you have a question about how raw pieces fit your dog, ask your veterinarian.

Questions

Can I freeze freeze-dried salmon?

The directions on the pouch say to store it cool and dry, and they do not mention the freezer. We stay with the printed instruction. If you decide to use the freezer anyway, that is your decision, and a tightly closed, completely dry container would matter even more.

Should I move it to a jar?

The pouch is the packaging it ships in, and its directions are to reseal it and keep it cool and dry. A jar is a matter of preference. If you use one, pick a jar that closes tightly and is dry inside, and keep the pouch details handy.

Is the pantry a good spot?

Yes, if it stays cool and dry. A shelf away from the stove, the dishwasher and the sink fits that description. The shelf above the range is a poor choice, because steam and heat collect there. A cupboard near the dog's other supplies is easy to remember.

What if the pieces turn soft?

Dry pieces that have gone soft have taken on moisture, so they are no longer as the pouch left them. If a piece looks or smells different from when you opened the pouch, do not feed it. If many pieces are affected, ask Sniff and Shift through the product page.

Is there a best-by date?

Yes. Every pouch has a best-by date printed on it, one year from the day it was produced, and a sealed pouch goes by that date. Once you open it, we suggest finishing it within 30 days and resealing it each time. Ask your veterinarian about anything specific to your dog.
