General information, not veterinary advice
The guides, answers and feeding tips on salmondogtreat.com are general information about dog and cat treats. They are not veterinary advice, and they are not a diagnosis or treatment plan for any animal. Sniff & Shift LLC is a treat maker, not a veterinary practice, and nothing on this Site creates a veterinarian and client relationship.
Ask your vet about your own pet
Every animal is different. Before you feed these treats, talk with a licensed veterinarian if your pet:
- has a health condition, a sensitive stomach, or a food allergy or intolerance;
- is on a prescription or special diet;
- is a puppy, kitten, pregnant, nursing or a senior; or
- has never had a particular ingredient before.
Read the ingredients for every product
- Fish. The salmon treat has one ingredient, wild-caught salmon. It is fish. If your pet has trouble with fish, do not feed it.
- Raw. The salmon is raw before it is freeze-dried; it is not cooked. In the Seafood Sampler, the salmon and shrimp are raw before freeze-drying and the mussels are blanched.
- Seafood Sampler. The sampler pairs salmon with shrimp and blue-lipped mussels, one bag each, and the product page says it contains shellfish and fish. If your pet has trouble with fish or shellfish, do not feed it.
- Stock. Some products may show as sold out. Ingredients on the product page you are buying from are the ones to read.
We cannot promise that any treat is free of an ingredient that is a problem for your pet. If an ingredient is a problem for your pet, do not feed that treat.
Raw product handling
Handle these treats as raw pet food. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after handling raw pet food, and washing and then disinfecting surfaces, bowls and utensils that touch it (FDA, Get the Facts! Raw Pet Food Diets can be Dangerous to You and Your Pet). VCA Animal Hospitals advises caution with freeze-dried or dehydrated raw treats because of the risk of bacterial contamination to the pet and to other pets and people (VCA, Dog Treats).
Raw salmon and salmon poisoning disease
The Merck Veterinary Manual says dogs get salmon poisoning disease from eating raw or undercooked salmon, trout or similar fish that carry an infected fluke, that it occurs only in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, from northern California to Alaska, and that prevention is based on not feeding dogs those fish raw or undercooked (Merck Veterinary Manual, Salmon Poisoning Disease). Our salmon is Alaskan and raw before freeze-drying. We make no claim that freeze-drying makes it safe or unsafe. Ask your veterinarian before feeding it, and contact your vet promptly if your pet seems unwell after eating any fish.
Treats are a supplement, not a meal
These products are for treating and rewarding. They are not a complete and balanced diet. Keep treats to a small share of your pet's daily food and adjust meals if you give more treats. The package label lists the calories. Your vet can tell you what amount is right for your pet.
Feed with care
- Always supervise your pet while it eats a treat.
- Size the treat to the pet: break pieces into smaller ones for small dogs and for cats, and pick a piece size that suits your pet's size and chewing habits.
- For a cat, break the salmon into small pieces or crumble it over food.
- Keep fresh water available at all times.
- Introduce a new treat gradually, starting with a small amount, so you can see how your pet does with it.
- Reseal the bag after opening and store it cool and dry.
- Stop feeding and contact your vet if you notice vomiting, diarrhea, itching, choking or any other change that worries you. In an emergency, call your vet or an emergency animal hospital right away.
Nutrition facts from outside sources
Where this Site repeats what an outside source says about a food in general, such as the AKC or the Merck Veterinary Manual on salmon, it names and links that source. Unless the Site says otherwise, those statements describe the food in general, not our treats specifically, and they are not a claim that any treat will prevent, treat or cure a condition.
