A pouch of freeze-dried salmon in the stocking

Updated

A salmon stocking stuffer for dogs and cats can be one 1.5 ounce pouch of freeze-dried pink salmon, a single ingredient that the listing calls shelf stable and lightweight. It is freeze-dried raw, so ask the owner first if the pet is not yours, wash your hands after handling it, and give cats small pieces after a vet's okay.

Does a pouch of salmon make a good stocking stuffer?

It fits the job. Our salmon comes in one size, a 1.5 ounce pouch, and the listing calls it lightweight. That is about the whole fit test for a stocking: one small pouch, no assembly, nothing to plug in.

What is inside is just as short. The only ingredient is wild-caught pink salmon, freeze-dried in small batches by Sniff and Shift in Malvern, Pennsylvania, and the pieces include skin. The listing also calls it shelf stable.

The product page has the details for anyone who wants them. What you are choosing is simple: a small, single ingredient pouch that one person can hand to another without a long explanation.

Can the pouch sit in a stocking before the day?

A sealed pouch goes by the best by date printed on the bag. Our guidance is best by 1 year from production, so check the printed date when you pick one up and again when you tuck it into the stocking. Our shelf life guide walks through the dates in more detail.

The 30 days we recommend for finishing a pouch starts when it is opened, not when it is wrapped. A pouch that stays sealed until the morning has not started that clock.

Until then, keep the pouch cool, dry and sealed, and use your own judgment about where it waits.

Is it for the dog, the cat or both?

The listing says the salmon suits adult dogs of all sizes. For a home with a cat too, one pouch can serve both animals, with a catch: the cat gets small pieces, and your vet gets a say before it starts. We give no amount for a cat, and the calculator on our product page is for dogs only.

Every piece in the pouch is the same salmon, so there is no dog version or cat version to choose between. If both are hanging stockings, our guide for homes with dogs and cats covers sharing one pouch between two animals. The pieces are medium sized, per the listing, and they break into small quick rewards, so snapping a few smaller for the cat is simple.

Should you ask before giving raw salmon as a gift?

Yes, if the pet is not yours. This salmon is freeze-dried raw, and some homes do not feed raw at all. A quick question to the owner keeps the gift something they can use. Wash your hands after handling the pieces, and tell the owner to do the same.

The bag says: "Feed as a treat or meal topper." That is how the pouch is meant to be used, as a treat or sprinkled over a meal, not as the meal. A gift pouch is still a topper and a treat, and the pet's regular food stays the main course. When the owner opens it, the bag's own directions apply: fresh water nearby, and someone watching while the pet eats.

A short checklist if you are gifting it, whether the pouch is going to a neighbor, a sibling or your own dog:

  1. Check the printed best by date.
  2. Tell the owner it is freeze-dried raw salmon.
  3. Mention that cats get small pieces, with their vet's say.
  4. Keep the pouch sealed until the day.

Questions

Is the 1.5 ounce pouch the only size?

Yes. The salmon comes in one size, a 1.5 ounce pouch. There is no larger bag and no smaller one, so what you see on the product page is what goes in the stocking.

Can I wrap the pouch?

Keep it sealed under whatever you wrap it in. The pouch needs to stay cool and dry, and it needs to be resealed once it is open, so the person opening it should know that much.

Can a cat have salmon from the stocking?

In small pieces, and after you ask your vet. Snap the pieces small before you offer any, and let the vet decide how often. We do not give an amount for a cat.

How much should the dog get on the day?

Use the treat budget calculator on the product page. It is a dogs only tool, set at 10 percent of a dog's daily calories, and it shows the answer in grams and ounces of salmon. If your vet gives a different figure, follow the vet.

What if the owner does not feed raw?

Then this is not the gift for that home. Choose something else for them. Raw is a matter for each household and its vet, and a stocking is not the place to start the argument.

When does the 30 days start?

When the pouch is opened. Wrapping the pouch does not start the clock. Our guidance is to use an opened pouch within 30 days, and until that moment the best by date printed on the bag is the date to go by.
