Taking freeze-dried salmon along to the dog park
Updated
Salmon treats for the dog park come down to a few habits. Read the park's posted rules before you bring any. Keep the pouch closed and the bits for your own dog. If another dog looks hopeful, ask its owner first, and take no for an answer. Weigh your dog's share at home.
Should you bring salmon treats to the dog park?
Read the sign at the gate, and look for anything about food. We do not know your park's rules, and we are not going to guess at them. A park may say nothing about treats, or it may say something clear, and the posted rule is the one that counts.
If treats are allowed, bring them as you would anywhere else: weighed at home, in a closed container, with the pouch resealed. If the sign says no food, the salmon stays in the pouch, or at home.
Do the breaking in your own kitchen first.
Before you go, a short list:
- Check the park's posted rules
- Weigh your dog's share
- Reseal the pouch
- Pack water
- Plan where you will wash your hands
How do you carry salmon at the park?
Closed, and out of sight until you use it. The bag says: "Reseal the pouch once it is open and store it cool and dry." That is the full carrying instruction, and the park does not change it. Keep your dog's share in its own container, the pouch resealed in your bag, and take out only what you plan to hand over.
If you would rather carry bits in a pocket, our smell guide covers keeping salmon off hands and pockets, so we will not walk through it again.
Because this is salmon freeze-dried from raw, the bag's hand washing line comes to the park with you. The bag says: "Wash your hands after handling it." That is why the checklist has a spot for it.
Can you give salmon to other people's dogs?
Not without asking the owner, and the owner can say no. Another person's dog is on another person's plan. You do not know what that dog eats, what its vet has said, or whether the owner would rather it not take food from strangers. Ask, wait for the answer, and let the answer stand.
Asking looks like this: show the owner what it is, ask whether the dog may have a bit, and give it only if the answer is yes. If the owner says not today, put the pouch back in your bag and move on.
The calculator covers your own dog, not the one beside you, so a bit for a visitor is a bit your dog's share did not plan for. Bring your own dog's share and no bonus for visitors. The bag says: "Not intended as a complete diet." Your dog's share is the number that counts.
How much salmon should you bring to the park?
Your dog's share for the visit, weighed at home. The calculator on our product page takes a daily calorie number from your vet or your dog's food, and it shows a 10 percent allowance as salmon by weight. The calculator is built that way and cannot be tuned. A different share from your vet replaces the calculator's.
The park visit comes out of the day's total, so every bit handed out on the grass is a bit your dog does not get at home that evening. Weigh the visit's share, put it in its own container, and leave the rest of the pouch closed at home or in your bag.
For days that go beyond the park, every salmon page we publish is listed on the guides hub.
Questions
What if other dogs crowd around me for the salmon?
Put the pouch away and move off. That is the whole answer, and it needs no theory about dogs or food. Close the container, keep your hands to yourself, and walk to another part of the park. We make no claim about what a group of dogs will do.
Should I use salmon to call my dog at the park?
You can. A bit from your own dog's share is a reward for coming back, and the same weighed share covers it. This page does not teach recall. It only covers having the pouch with you, and the visit's share is still the limit on how many rewards go out.
Should I wash my hands before petting other dogs?
The bag says: "Wash your hands after handling it." So wash after you handle the salmon, and handle it only when you can follow that line afterward. The plan you made at the gate matters more than any rule we could add. If there is nowhere to wash, keep the pouch closed.
What should I say when another owner asks what the treat is?
Say what it is: one ingredient, wild-caught salmon, freeze-dried raw in small batches in Malvern, Pennsylvania. Then suggest they ask their own vet about their dog. You can also mention that the salmon is raw before it is freeze-dried, so the bag's line applies to anyone who handles it: "Wash your hands after handling it."
What do I do with the bits I did not use?
They go back in the pouch, which then gets resealed. The bag says: "Reseal the pouch once it is open and store it cool and dry." Put the leftovers away before you leave the park, and weigh tomorrow's share fresh.
