Splitting one salmon pouch between several dogs

Updated

Salmon treats for multiple dogs come from one 1.5 oz pouch split by weight, not by headcount. Run the calculator on our product page once for each dog, break the pieces to suit each one, and hand them out one dog at a time. Reseal the pouch when you are done and wash your hands.

How do you share salmon treats between multiple dogs?

Treat the pouch as a shared supply and each dog's share as its own line item. The pouch holds 1.5 oz of wild-caught salmon and nothing else, so the only thing to divide is weight. Each dog's weight comes from its own daily calorie number, and the dogs do not have to agree with each other.

Sharing salmon treats between dogs is easier when the splitting happens before anyone is called over. Set each dog's portion in its own dish, then start. The pouch itself stays closed during the handout.

A routine for when more than one dog is waiting:

  1. Run the treat calculator on our product page once per dog, with that dog's own daily calories.
  2. Break pieces to suit each dog, smaller for the dog that takes smaller bites.
  3. Set each dog's share apart in its own dish before you call anyone.
  4. Hand out to one dog at a time, and let that dog finish before the next piece goes anywhere.
  5. Reseal the pouch as soon as the dishes are filled.
  6. Wash your hands when the last dish is empty.

The salmon is freeze-dried raw, and the bag covers the last step. The bag says: "Wash your hands after handling it."

Does each dog get the same amount of salmon?

Only if they happen to eat the same number of calories a day. Each dog gets its own run of the treat budget calculator on our product page: a default 10 percent of that dog's daily calories, shown as salmon by weight from the label's 85.6 kcal per ounce, approximately. Two different calorie numbers give two different weights from the same pouch.

Your veterinarian sets each dog's real share, and the vet may want a different share for one dog than for another. The calculator stays at its 10 percent default; when the vet gives you a different share, the vet's number wins.

Splitting one treat pouch between dogs by weight rather than by count also means nobody has to referee pieces. The label lists no per-piece weight and no count of pieces in a pouch, so a dish on a scale is the only fair measure we have.

How do you hand out pieces to several dogs at once?

One at a time, and with you in the room. The bag says: "Provide fresh water and supervise while feeding." With several dogs that line means several water bowls and your attention on each dog until its piece is gone.

Think of it as fueling two cars from one can. You fill each tank to its own mark, and you do not pour into both at once.

If your dogs squabble over food, that is a question for a trainer or your vet, not for a treat page. We can tell you how to divide the pouch, and that is where our part ends.

What if one dog is small and another is large?

The pouch does not care, and neither does the method. The listing says: "The pieces are medium sized and break into small, quick rewards." Leave a piece whole for the dog that takes it in one bite, and snap it down for the dog that does not. Our small dogs guide goes into breaking pieces for a small mouth.

The weights will differ, and that is the point. A small dog with a small daily calorie number gets a small weight from the calculator; a large dog with a bigger number gets more. Both come out of the same 1.5 oz, and every extra dog is another share taken from it.

However many dogs share it, the pouch gets closed after each handout. The bag says: "Reseal the pouch once it is open and store it cool and dry." More pages like this one are listed in the guides hub.

Questions

Can two dogs share one pouch?

Yes. Salmon treats for two dogs come out of one pouch split by weight, with each dog's share set by its own daily calorie number through the calculator. Keep the pieces in the sealed pouch between uses and dish out each dog's portion separately. There is no rule that one dog gets one pouch.

Should each dog have its own pouch?

Only if you find it easier to track. A single pouch divided by weight works, and the bag's reseal line applies whether one dog or three are eating from it. Separate pouches make sense when the dogs live in different rooms or eat at very different times, which is a convenience call rather than anything on the label.

Can the cat have some of the same pouch?

The listing says the pouch is for dogs and cats, and for a cat it says to break a piece small or crumble it over food. The calculator is written for dogs, so ask your vet about a cat's amount. Our cats page covers serving a cat.

What if one of my dogs is on a vet-set diet?

Then that dog's share is whatever the vet says it is, which may be none. The calculator only works at its 10 percent default, so for that dog go by the vet's own amount rather than the calculator, or skip salmon for that dog entirely. The other dogs keep their own shares. Dishes set apart ahead of time keep the lines from blurring.

Do I need to watch every dog while they eat?

Yes. The bag says: "Provide fresh water and supervise while feeding." That is one dog or five. One piece at a time, to one dog at a time, lets you watch each dog until its piece is gone.

Can salmon stand in for a meal for any of them?

No. The bag is clear that the pouch is not intended as a complete diet, and that holds for every dog in the house. Use it as a treat or a topper beside each dog's regular food, in the share your vet is happy with.
