Rewarding leash walking with freeze-dried salmon

Updated

Salmon treats for leash training are handed out on the move, at your side, from a pocket on the side the dog walks on. Break the pieces at home, carry them loose or in the resealed pouch, bring water, and count the walk's bits against the allowance from the calculator on our product page.

How do you use salmon treats for leash training?

The same way you would use any small reward on a walk: the dog is beside you, a bit arrives at your side, and the walk carries on. Salmon for walk training brings two product facts and nothing more. Medium sized pieces that break into small, quick rewards is how the listing puts it, and the bag carries the feeding and storage lines quoted below.

Here is one short practice walk:

  1. At home, break a few pieces into bits over the open pouch.
  2. Pocket the bits on the side your dog walks on, and close the pouch.
  3. Walk. When the dog is beside you, hand a bit down at your side and keep moving.
  4. Pay at the same spot every time, the way the gas cap is always on the same side of the car.
  5. Back home, reseal the pouch if it came along. The bag says: "Reseal the pouch once it is open and store it cool and dry."
  6. Offer water, then wash your hands. The bag says: "Provide fresh water and supervise while feeding."

That is one way to run it. For the general rules of a training session with this pouch, see our guide to salmon training treats.

How do you hand out treats while walking?

Low and at your side. Rewarding a dog on the leash means the hand with the bit drops to your pant seam on the dog's side, and the dog takes it there. Keep the leash in one hand and the bits in the other, and do not swap mid-block. The bit goes out one at a time rather than as a handful.

Crumbs count. A pinch of crumb from the pocket is a reward too, and it comes out of the same allowance as a whole bit, weighed the same way.

Where do you carry the salmon on a walk?

A pocket on the dog's side, or the pouch itself in a jacket pocket. The listing says the pouch is lightweight, shelf stable and clean to carry. The car and longer trips are covered in our blog on salmon treats for travel, and this page leaves them there.

The salmon is freeze-dried raw, and the bag's hand washing line follows the pouch into the pocket. The bag says: "Wash your hands after handling it." On a walk that means when you get home, not mid-block, and the leash hand gets washed too.

How many pieces does one walk use?

The bag does not say, and we do not guess. The label states energy only: about 85.6 kcal per ounce, in a 1.5 oz pouch. To turn that into a walk, use the treat budget calculator on our product page. Its default is 10 percent of the daily calories you type in, and the answer comes back as salmon by weight rather than a count. The right percent for your dog, and the calorie number itself, come from your veterinarian.

Pocket the walk's share before you leave. When the pocket is empty, the rest of the walk is just a walk. A second walk that day shares the same allowance; it does not get a fresh one. The other guides on this site are collected on the guides hub.

Questions

Do I need to prep the pieces at home?

It is the easier order of operations. Breaking a medium sized piece on a moving sidewalk, with a leash in the other hand, is a juggling act. Break at home over the open pouch, pocket the bits, and close the pouch before you go.

What if my dog pulls toward the treat pocket?

The steps on this page do not fix that, and a trainer can. One thing you can change on your own is where the bits sit: move them to a pocket on the side away from the dog, or into the closed pouch, and pay from your hand only. If pulling continues, book the trainer.

Can I use crumbs on a walk?

Yes. A pinch of crumb can be handed down as a reward, and crumbs count against the allowance like anything else. Crumbs are harder to hand down at your side without dropping some, so a small container in the pocket helps. Wash your hands when you get home.

Do I need water on a walk with salmon treats?

The bag says: "Provide fresh water and supervise while feeding." A walk with treats is feeding. For a short walk around the block, the water bowl at home when you get back covers it. Going farther? Carry a water bottle and a bowl that folds flat.

Can a walk's treats replace part of breakfast?

The bag says: "Not intended as a complete diet." Whether treats on a walk should take the place of part of a meal is your veterinarian's call, not ours. The calculator on our product page shows what a share of the daily calories looks like as salmon by weight; it does not rebalance a meal, and this page will not try to.
