Freeze-dried salmon for a big dog, piece by piece
Updated
Salmon treats for large dogs come from the same 1.5 oz pouch as any dog's. The listing describes the pieces as medium sized; a big dog can take one whole, or you can break it up for a longer session. Our product page calculator turns daily calories into a weight, and a bigger number gives a bigger share.
Are freeze-dried salmon pieces big enough for a large dog?
There is one pouch and one piece size. The listing says: "The pieces are medium sized and break into small, quick rewards." That is the whole description, and it is the same description a small dog's owner reads.
The fit chart on our product page puts the pouch with adult dogs of all sizes, and the big ones are in that group. What the label does not give is a per-piece weight or a count of pieces in the pouch, so we will not put a number on how a medium piece sits in a large mouth. If you want more in one go, hand over two pieces and count both against the day.
Whole salmon pieces for a large dog are not a separate product. The pouch is the pouch.
Should a large dog get whole pieces or broken ones?
That depends on what the session is for, not on the dog's size. One reward at the end of a walk can be a whole piece. A training session with many small wins calls for broken bits, and every bit still counts toward the same daily weight.
Our listing puts it plainly: "Break the pieces small and the pouch goes further." A large dog does not change that arithmetic. A whole piece is simply more of the day's share spent in one moment.
Either way, the feeding line on the bag applies. The bag says: "Provide fresh water and supervise while feeding." Before a session with a big dog, run through a short check:
- Decide if this session is one reward or many, then break pieces to match.
- Weigh out the share the calculator gave you, and stop at that number.
- Put out fresh water.
- Reseal the pouch before the first piece goes out.
- Wash your hands when the session is over.
The salmon is freeze-dried raw, and the last step comes straight off the pouch. The bag says: "Wash your hands after handling it."
How much salmon fits a large dog's treat allowance?
Our guide on how many salmon treats a day lays out the method in three steps. The short version: take your dog's daily calorie number from your vet or the food bag, type it into the calculator, and read the result as a weight of salmon.
The treat budget calculator on our product page starts at 10 percent of the daily calories you type in and converts that share using the label's figure of about 85.6 kcal per ounce. Type in a larger daily calorie number and a larger weight comes out. That is arithmetic, not advice. The treat allowance for a large dog is set by your veterinarian, who may want a different share than the default.
Think of the calculator as a fuel gauge. It reads what you put in and does not care what badge is on the hood.
We do not publish salmon amounts by dog weight. The label has none, and we are not going to invent a chart to fill the gap.
How do you make one pouch last with a big dog?
If every reward is a whole piece, 1.5 oz goes in fewer handouts. Two habits stretch it. First, weigh the day's share instead of counting pieces, and once the dish is empty, the day's salmon is done. Second, break pieces for anything that is not a single big reward; the listing's own line is that smaller pieces make the pouch go further.
Between sessions, the bag's storage line is the whole instruction. The bag says: "Reseal the pouch once it is open and store it cool and dry." Nothing about a large dog changes where the pouch lives.
Salmon treats for big dogs and small ones are the same pieces at different weights. If the other end of the scale is in your house, the small dogs guide covers breaking pieces down for a small mouth. Other single-question pages sit in our guides hub.
Questions
Do large dogs need bigger salmon treats?
Not from us. There is one pouch and one piece size, and the listing calls the pieces medium sized and places the pouch with adult dogs of all sizes. Give a whole piece for a single reward or break one up for several. What changes with a bigger dog is the daily weight the calculator shows, not the pieces.
Should I watch a large dog while it eats salmon treats?
Yes, for the same reason you would watch any dog. The bag says: "Provide fresh water and supervise while feeding." That line is printed on every pouch regardless of the dog's size. Put the water down, hand over the piece, and stay in the room until it is gone.
Does a bigger dog get a bigger treat allowance?
Type a bigger daily calorie number into the calculator and it shows a bigger weight of salmon. That is the arithmetic of the 10 percent default on our product page, nothing more. The actual share your dog should get is a question for your veterinarian.
Is the pouch made for large breeds?
It is not a large breed product, and it is not a small breed product either. There is one 1.5 oz pouch, the listing's fit chart puts it with adult dogs of all sizes, and the listing says cats can have it too. Large breed salmon treats, as a separate item, are not something we make.
Can a large dog have salmon as a topper as well as a treat?
Yes. The bag says: "Feed as a treat or meal topper." The listing suggests crumbling a piece over kibble or a raw meal. Whatever you crumble over dinner comes out of the same daily weight as the pieces you hand over, so weigh both against one number.
Is freeze-dried salmon a complete diet for a big dog?
No. The bag states that it is not intended as a complete diet, and the size of the dog does not change that. Salmon sits beside your dog's regular food as a reward or a topper, in the amount your vet is happy with.
